If your Dell will hold 4GB, go for that. RAM is cheap right now. To get Aero Glass to work good with any other applications running you need at least 2GB. Turn Aero off and you'll notice a big boost in speed.

Generally with ram it will speed up somethings on the computer like downloads and burning CD/DVDs and you can usually open multiple programs on your computer and for vista you should at least have one gig at the minimum adding more ram would be a great idea but a way to make it faster for a cheaper price would be to buy a two gig thumb drive that would probably cost about 70$ dollars but it's cheaper then buying more ram and with the new vista system it will look at the thumb drive as if you did install two gigs of ram on your computer and it would also be good so if you like ultimate vista you can use the areo effect as well which is really cool.

You have at least 2 gig of Ram for Vista. Also, I upgraded to Vista, and I wish I hadn't. Many bugs on software and everything runs slower.

No. Forget getting more ram. Your mistake was in upgrading to VISTA to begin with. As with ANY new operating system, you should wait a year for all the bugs and kinks to be worked out before jumping in. As I'm sure you've read already...VISTA isn't selling...for a reason.

If you have premium then you need that extra gig...basic runs off of a a lesser amount. But an extra gig should do the trick

The more the better. Vista utilizies SuperFetch (pre-fetches more of your applications into RAM), so having 2 gigs+, you'll notice a difference. I sure do.

No, you should get another operating system that makes
better use of your hardware.
Your operating system is defective. I recommend replacing
it with one of:
http://fedora.redhat.com
http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.debian.org
http://www.ubuntu.org
http://www.slackware.org
http://www.freebsd.org

or if you can spend some money:
