The purpose was different for each country that participated.
You may want to narrow your scope to the Central Powers or the Entente Allies, or even a single country. Take a look at Henry W. Ruoff's 'Book of the War', see the link below:

The Purpose?
Was to win... put simply.
however to address those talking about Franz Ferdinand's assination - that was just a pretext for escalation. Neither Germany nor Britain wanted to "just declare war" so they jumped on the band wagon when the excuse was provided "defending ones allies" sounds alot better then "we just dont like those guys"...
It was a battle of Empires - with the largest one having more friends then the other. So germany got beaten. In my opinion if they had waited just 10 more years they would have won a resounding victory over the Allied powers.

the real goal of WW1 was for Germany to expand her colonies and her influence in Europe. Germany had very few colonies in 1913 contrary to England and France and the Kaiser wanted to a big chunk of the colonial cake.... the assassination of Francois Ferdinand was a pretext : Austria-Hungary declared war to Serbia who was allied with by Russia who declared war to Austria-Hungary who was allied with Germany who declared war to Russia who was allied with France and England who declared war to Germany. Actually everybody wanted to get rid of this belligerent Kaiser who was rather arrogant and stupid and was a constant threat to the peace in Europe. The French and the English thought that they would get rid of him in some weeks but they were dramatically wrong and the war lasted almost 5 years and ended only when the Americans got into it quite lately though in 1917... At that stage they were pouring 200,000 men each month in 1918 on France's soil and the Germans were totally worn out. They claim an armistice when they realized that they could not wage the war any longer even if the war was not waged on their soil. After the war, people like Hitler pretended that Germany was stabbed in the back but the reality was different : Germany was bloodless but the fact that the German people never saw a French soldier on their soil helped them to believe and adhere to the crazy theories of Hitler and the Jews and the Communists became a very convenient scapegoat for demagogues like Hitler.
