Best number for what? There is no objective judgement on which is "best".
1 is best if its a rating scale where 1 means best.
2 is best if you mean the lowest prime number.
3 is best if you mean the first odd number greater than 1.
4 is best if you mean the lowest square greater than 1 (2 x 2).
5 is best if the best means in the middle.
6 is best if you mean the sum of the first 3 numbers (1 + 2 + 3).
7 is best if you mean the number with the most mythological connotations (7 deadly sins, 7 virtues, 7 pillars of Hercules, etc.)
8 is best if you mean the lowest cube greater than 1 (2 x 2 x 2).
9 is best if you mean the square of the lowest odd number greater than 1 (3 x 3)
10 is best if its a rating scale from 1 to 10 where 10 means best.

It must be 9. This has psychological value. A lot of people believe that 9 is a magical number and it gets fortunes. It has a specialty. If all the digits in any multiple of nine are added till you reach single digit, the result will be 9! Ex: 9*2=18. The sum of 1 and 8 is 9. And so on...

If 1 in included then it is 1 because it is the only number to have only one factor as a natural number, that is itself.
1*1 = 1

No other natural number is a factor of 1

If 1 isn't included then it is 2, the only even prime number.

Next is 6, as it is the product and the sum of its factors
1 + 2 + 3 = 6
1*2*3 = 6

I feel that 1, 2 and 6 are all equally interesting

Curious question...
that leaves only the digits 2,3,4,5,6,7,8
I'm going to pick the one that divides the others equally, so 5. Also, it is a prime number (although so are 3 & 7), plus it is the greatest age of kids for a parent, and the easiest to learn as a times table - and the easiest division table too.

Oops, I forgot 9,... it throws off the whole 5 in the middle thing, but I still pick 5!
