I can't really tell you which companies to buy from, if you're looking for something in that price range... but I can certainly comment on manufacturers to stay far away from.
HP, Compaq, and Acer all build dreadfully bad products at this price level. Most of the time, the models that they sell in this range are built with the intent of them going wrong in about six months to a year, as to capitalize on unit turnaround or extended warranty profits. Apart from that, laptops at this price point are common to find in stores, but be EXTREMELY careful about rebates. Chances are, if you buy a 800$ laptop at Circuit City, and they promise you 200$ back by rebate, that check is never going to see the light of day.

Dell currently have their Inspiron 1501 laptop with dual core processor on sale for $699.
