Fear and ignorance. People are simply afraid of how accepting another person's choices in life might force them to think about their own choices.
The best example is the religious one. The Bible may speak ill of and condemn homosexuality but it also teaches its followers to leave the judgement and condemnation to God. The over zealous take the first bit to heart and forget the second bit because they fear anything that is so far outside their realm of understanding. They forget the teachings of love and imagine teachings of hate where none exist.
On a non-religious level many people simply fear that it may be somehow contagious, no matter how much they know this to be untrue.
People also mistake homosexuality to be synonymous with adultery and similar threats to family values despite the fact that heterosexuals engage in such behaviours as well. Even more if you consider the fact that there are so very many more heterosexuals.

Some Americans believe that America is sexually explicit, but contrarily we are not that out there compared to other countries. So we hide our sexuality, though circumstances show that what many people portray - is opposite to their true sexuality. (It's a psychological thing in most.) And being a gay guy - society sees a man in pink that loves clothes and wants to dance the night away, when in reality that is just a percentage of the gay society and many look down at a feminie symbol. (Simply, men don't want to look like wimps.) So they bash, and flame but no good comes of it.

Are you telling me I am no different than a homosexual? We are very different. I don't go around trying to push my lifestyle on everyone else. Why do gays feel the need to tell everyone they're gay? Because they get special rights, and won't hesitate to exercise those rights. Homosexuality is a mental illness, and it is a sin in every major religion. Why do you think they want to do away with religion?
Homosexuals are very different from the normal people.

While there is no excuse for hating anyone(because we shouldn't), they are different. The practice the art of sinning willfully. It is true that we all sin, but there is a difference when you make a concious decision daily to do it knowing it is wrong. We all sin and fall short of the glory of God. But we should not view Jesus and His death on the Cross as a license to sin. The Word of God says that shall we sin that grace may abound, no. May God Bless U.

Because society, backed up by religion, has tried to train us that the only thing that is acceptable is male & female and no other combination.
It is a shame that many cannot just accept people for what they are; they only seem to be able to accept them when they are what they want them to be.
