There is a reset/program button on the back of the unit where the control wires plug in. You will see a small LED next to it. Push the button and release it. The LED will stay on (solid)- now push the button on your remote control you want to reprogram. The LED will turn off, and you'll hear a click inside the machine. Repeat the process for each remote control. If you are programming a keypad-do the same process on the machine, then type your 4-digit password into the keypad and hit "enter". If you wish to clear the memory on the machine before starting, then push the program button in and hold it until the LED turns off. Then program each remote.
Incidentally, the "dip switches that some other people referred to where no longer used in 1996.

On the backside of the Gear Box suspended unit there is are numbers to be set. Take a sharp point and set those. Then set the hand held unit accordingly. The two must match. That is all there is to it. If you have a problem, take the hand held unit to Sears and the salesman will show you exactly how to do it.
