Resolved: The United Nations' obligation to protect global human rights ought to be valued above its obligation to respect national sovereignty.

Basically, for an argument in the proponency, important points include that it is ethical to protect humankind in general. One of the UN's goal is to protect global security, and since the end of the Cold War, there has been a dramatic decline in number of wars (Human Security Report). This is mostly, if not entirely, contributed to the work of the UN.

For an argument in the opponency, I can point out that choosing to intervene in independent nations in what choices they make may create war. However, that can easily be argued by the information I had listed above. Don't know how I can protect myself from that sort of argument.

My arguments are rather weak right now. Can someone help me out with their opinions? And how would you argue with my critieron?

being disrespectful of national sovereignity may cause wars. yes thats true. BUT like in darfur, the UN didnt intervene cuz the sudanese govt. didnt want them 2 and so many ppl r still probably dying over there. so what wud u rather do? let ppl die and respect national sovereignity or save their lives and kick out the idiots who are killing these innocents?
