Depends on the time of the year, sky conditions, location of the moon (is it's brightness hiding a normally bright star) and other factors.

However, Venus, when visible as the evening star, is usually the first thing seen at night, and the distance varys according to the location of earth and venus in their orbits.

i agree that you normaly see planet Venus as to be the second object to be seen after you see the moon.

if you ask for a star it's difficult to answer that, cause that depends in which hemisphere you look up into the sky

as far as i know Sirius is the brightest Star in the sky, but not the nearest, so if you are in the right location Sirius should be the first STAR you should see.
its 8.6 lightyears away which means that its not the nearest star, cause that is Proxima centauri with 3.8 lightyears

The Alpha Centauri system which is the nearest other star system appears to be the number 3 on the list of brightest stars

The second brightes star is Canopus in a distance of 316 lightyears
