let's see, markum (penn) kills his buddy dave boyle (tim robbins), indirectly confesses to his cop buddy (kevin bacon) who lets him walk free, and then they all attend a happy parade together (along with the late boyle's wife).

plus it turns out the dead girl's real murderers were just a bunch of kids who killed her because she saw them playing with a gun??

That ending pissed me off so much! I was kind of getting into the story until Sean Penn killed Tim Robbins then it was over for me.

Just saw the file and my take on the ending of the movie is:

1. Annabeth's speech was to convince Jimmy to not feel remorse about killing Dave as "he will do anything it takes to protect this family", and by that thought, it is not a bad deed. If he was to turn himself in, he would have left the family in lurch. And the speech is also meant to boost his ego saying he can be the king of this town, which to convince him to go back to his old self and be street thugs again together with Annabeth's brothers (the savage brothers). This could point out that Annabeth (and her family) was never very nice to begin with.

2. Read somewhere else on the web saying that - in the book it suggests that Celeste (Dave's wife) had something for Jimmy, and Annabeth knew it. That justifies 2 things in the movie:
1. Annabeth knew Jimmy was out and probably might kill Dave, and yet she did not call Jimmy to stop it from happening - she wants Celeste to suffer. (Jimmy: "last night? you knew?". Annabeth: Celeste called last night, told me what she told you....... What kind of wife would say that about her husband")
2. The death stare she gave Celeste when they look at each other across the street during the parade, signifies that her wish has been fulfilled, and she owned her.

3. On Katie's death, the mute boy (Brendan's brother) killed her. I am not sure the motive of the murder was it that he killed her so that Brendan will not leave with her, or was it a prank gone bad as explained by Sean to Jimmy. The friend wanted to kill him most probably because he found out they killed Katie.

4. The "gotcha" gesture Sean made to Jimmy was saying "I'm gonna catch you" (for Dave's murder). And in return Jimmy raised his arms with a "so what?" gesture. Remember Annabeth had already convinced him to go back to his old ways of being street thugs.

5. Celeste calling out to Michael (Dave's son) without getting a respond was probably a sign of him fulfilling his father's footsteps or also experienced other psychological issues (Michael had became increasingly weird).

The only thing I'm not so sure about the film is on Sean's wife. I didn't get the hidden theme in that part of the movie.

This movie was horrible? Are you kidding? The main and sub themes of this movie man - it's one of the best.

what could you need explained to you? it's just showing you that Penn's character wants someone to pay for the crime, so when he focuses on Robbin's character, he was going to kill him no matter what. Bacon couldn't have proven anything, and he understood why Robbins died, and understood that he was probably better off dead, anyway.

Great movie!

The answer is very simple:

The author was a hack who should never have gone into the movie business.

There's no deeper meaning, just bad writing.
