I just bought a 2004 Mazda3, used with 43000kms on it. I had only had it about 2 weeks, and today when my boyfriend and I took our dog to the park the back right break disc was sizzling hot!! We only had drivin about 1km when we smelt something really hot, and i looked back and I saw steam coming from teh back tire. Not sure why this could be. I aksed my boyfriend if he was riding the breaks while we were going through the park, and he said he might of been(he has driven 5 speed for 6 years and this was his first time driving an automatic so he isn;t used to it), but even if he was...how come the back breaks were soo hot and not the front....any help from some car experts out there would be greatly appreciated!!

Sounds as if he was riding the brakes, or maybe the park brake was not fully released. If the park brake is not regularly used the cables can get nasty, and even when the handle is in the released position the brake is still on. People who drive standard are more likely to use the park brake, so that might be what happened. Your rear brakes are disc brakes on that car so you may have a caliper sticking too. Head for the dealer and get it looked at while there is still warranty. In any case, get it cured soonest, because these problems get more expensive to fix every mile you drive, and there is also the safety issue.

Sounds to me, that if the car is rear disc brakes, which prob is. That the caliper is sticking (This is the device that holds the brake pads) it could also mean that his emergency/parking brake cable might also be hanging up. If they are drums in the back, it is possible that the adjuster may have over extended or again the emergency/parking brake cable might be frozen

He might of been riding the brake, but the parking break might of been on slightly. If you had got new brake pads...they might have been to big that's why they were smoking. But it's either the brake pad, the parking brake, riding it, or the brake rotor isn't functioning like it should be. I would take it into Car-X or a shop for a quick check. E-mail me if you have any questions!

Good luck!

Piston in caliper not releasing. If made out of nylon it could be swollen.

Depending on the break balancing, one or more of the breaks may actually break first - especially if barely riding one of the breaks.
