Is there any connection between the character Mathius I think he was called and the study, mathematics?

I sniffed around the internet and Mathius turns up in the Celtic, Spanish, Judeo-Christian mythology. Is there any signs he develped any systems of plus, minus, parentheses, essentially math, and the study was named after him?
