as a newborn, my baby would just yawn and want to nurse. Now that she is older, she becomes more clingy, more sensitive (like if she sits down a little too hard, she will cry like its the end of the world), rubs her eyes, yawns, or just doesn't seem her usual happy self. I let her make her own schedule from the get-go, and she's currently taking naps at about 9:30am, then at around 1 p.m. and has just started to skip her afternoon nap at around 5 p.m. Just watch your baby. You'll figure it out. Observation is a VERY useful parenting tool :)

Crying is usually the one of the last cues that your baby is tired. Other earlier signs are yawning and a disinterest in their environment (the baby is looking at you while you are talking to him and then will not respond to you by looking away).
As baby gets older, they will rub their eyes and get generally fussy. As a previous poster stated, if they baby is young, don't keep him up for more than two hours.

In addition to the rubbing of the eyes, and yawning I notice a change from content to whiny. I try to change activities and if he is still fussy, then he goes down for a nap. I don't know how old your baby is, but trust me you'll get it. As my baby gets older (he's 7mo now) I'm amazed at how in tune I am with his "signs". If you have a day care provider, they might be able to tell you what signs they see.

fussiness and eye rubbing are the two biggest indicators for me. Oh, and yawning and not as playful; kind of cranky.
Also, if your baby is under about 6 months, then if it has been two hours or so since s/he last slept, then it is probably about time. After 6 months, anywhere from 2-5 hours, depending on their schedule.

Besides the obvious (your child dozing off), If your baby is acting fussy, irritable, grumpy and you just can’t seem to please him/her then chances are he/she is tired and wants to sleep. And sometimes, the child is tired but still nevertheless acting difficult, chances are you’ll need to soothe your baby to sleep. Usually, rocking the child in your arms for a few minutes helps speed the process. Hope this answers your question.

When he was an infant, up until around 7 months or so, my son would always start tugging on his ears when he was tired. I thought it was weird, but apparently its very common. Many other moms I have talked said their's did the same thing.

My newborn daughter has a special cry.. Its not as loud and sounds like a whine. she will also rub her eyes, tug on her ears, pull her hair or suck very hard on her fingers. lol you will definitly see the signs of your baby being tired, so don't worry your doing a great job.

You will be able to tell. An infant will not stay awake if they don't want to, even if you want them to. After a couple of days/weeks you will have a schedule soo down pat that you could do it in your sleep (sometimes you even feel like you are). My 1 yr old barely makes it now when I want her to stay up. The true question of motherhood is how do you get them to go to sleep when you can hardly see strait.

A fetus does sleep interior the womb. usually, it occurs after an brisk (for mom) era. once you're up and transferring round, procuring, cleansing the living house, etc., it truly is no longer unusual for the fetus to in reality be rocked to sleep. he's only effective in those sessions. in case you start up to agonize, sit and relax for a couple of minutes, perhaps drink some juice or a soda, and your toddler will likely start up transferring again before lengthy.

red eyes and/or eyebrows
rubbing eyes
rubbing ears
hands on or scratching head
If you and your baby are on a routine, it's much easier to tell if the signs are bc of sleepiness.
Best of luck.
