I know that English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa, Tsonga, Tswana, etc are spoken in South Africa. But in the cities what is the most spoken language. Cape Town? Johannesburg? What about the Shantytowns and Soweto?

Almost everybody understands english.
The main languages are english afrikaans and zulu

Cape Town : Afrikaans, English, Xhosa.

Durban : Zulu, English, Afrikaans.

Bloemfontein : Sotho, Afrikaans, English.

Johannesburg : English , and all the other black languages and many other foreign ones from Africa and the rest of the world it's the biggest melting pot of cultures after NY.

There are a number of official languages, but English and Afrikaans have the most speakers. Afrikaans is derived from Dutch. It's still very similar but not always completely mutually intelligible. That's what you'd be thinking of.

Cape Town and Johannesburg......it's English.
Shantytowns and Soweto speak ALL the languages in SA because it is a totally mixed society. So if you speak English, you are bound to be understood.

English, the shanty towns speak their traditional languages and also afrikaans, we are a country that have 11 official languages, so choose which ever language you want to speak, but english and afrikaans are the most spoken

French is spoken there a little.
There is also the ones you said...
Johannesburg mostly speaks english and afrikaans. [i'm from there]
so does the cape...
as for the other two places..i have no idea

as above, a multitude of languages are spokien or understood.

however our politicians speak a dialect of bullsh!t.
