It perhaps means in general 'a participant' in the activity referred to. For example, when we say that a person or company joins in a commercial activity, he or the company is a player. Likewise, a player in respect of a relationship could mean someone who is there for a short period or for fun, and is not a serious participant.

i think it depends.

like when it comes to dating 'player' is someone who is "unfaithful," and usually plays around in a relationship. it is most often this area is where it is commonly used. other than that, there's the traditional use of it in sports

Someone who plays w/ someones heads & makes you think you are in a relationship when they are using you & being w/ other people & doing the same thing to them.
