I work for a hospital on a particularly "sickly" floor. I have never been a very sickly person, but since starting this job in January I have not had a single day where I have been at 100% health. The problem is that I have had to call in sick several days already. I was sick one weekend in january, one day in feb, and 3 days this month. Each time I was out I called in way before my shift was due to start, and when i came back prensented a Dr.'s note forbidding me to come back to work.
All of these issues; from the flu to diareah, has been contracted through the job!
My queston is, can I be terminated due to poor attendance? Considering that I work with immuniocompromised people and have had a DR's note for every single time? I have also not been 'spoken to" about my absences yet, but I can tell that they are starting to get angry. Hell, I'm angry too, I'm losing a fortune in pay here!

Any insight would be very helpful

Technically they can't hold it against you if you have a Dr's note, but if you live in what's called an "at will state" they can fire you for no reason.

What was the agreement regarding attendance when you were hired?

You can also bring it up with your boss. Maybe they can transfer you to a "healthier" section of the hospital.

Best of luck to you!

Well, a note will at least make finding another job a bit easier. Truthfully, employers can terminate you for any job-related reason, and the only reasons they retain employees is intuitive. It takes more money to hire and train a new employee than it does to keep one, but sometimes they determine the ratio to even out, and will can you. If you get terminated, at least it won't be because of theft or conduct. You'll just have to explain on your interview that you have notes to vouch for your lack of attendance.

It doesn't matter whether you have a note or not. You have to look at the attendance policy. Did you receive a handbook when you started which explains that policy? If you violated it, you can be fired.

Depends on what your employers guidelines are. Go to human resources and find out!! In Tx you r an "AT WILL EMPLOYEE" and the employer can fire you cause' he/she doesn't like your tie that day. If you are chronically sick try a different line of work. Are u sure it ain't psychosomatic in your case ?

Yes, if it was an unplanned attendance occurrence and you have used up all your attendance points for the year.
