Since Mars orbits the sun just like the earth but further out and at a slower speed, there are times when Mars is actually on the far side of the sun from earth and we can't see it because its hidden in the glare of the sun.
But most of the time Mars' orbit is not behind the sun so we can see it most nights (though sometimes its close to the sun and we only see it just before dawn or just after sunset.

You can't see it during the day. The only planet that can be visible during the day is Venus, and even that's difficult to see because of the glare of the sun. Also, if Mars is on the other side of the sun from Earth, we won't see it. We can only see Mars if it is up in our night sky.
