The question should not be "Can the New York Knicks be a contender in the East?" Since the Knicks are already in 8th place, they are a contender. The question should be "Will the Knicks make the playoffs this year?" Shockingly, I feel that the New York Knicks will be in the playoffs at season's end. As you said, the Knicks could make the playoffs having Marbury, Francis, and Lee. I even like Eddy Curry and when he gets hot he is hot. Now, the seed the Knicks get is very important. I feel that if the Knicks take the #8 seed, they will be ousted first round by Detroit. On the other hand, if they make seed #7, the Knicks could beat any #2 seed, such as Cleveland, Chicago, or any1 besides Detroit. This is VERY slim, but if the Knicks do not face Detroit at all, they could make the NBA finals. If Detroit gets ousted before they play the Knicks, the Knicks have the ability to beat any of the other teams. Good luck to the Knicks on accomplishing that one!

Knicks are not a contender, nor will they be in playoffs. Sixers will push Orlando and New Jersey out of playoff picture. They have won seven straight. Any team in Atlantic Division capable of winning 7 straight should be in Playoffs without a doubt. Knicks still have no team chemistry. They just got a lucky win thats all.

i might consider John. The Knicks have the skills to make it to the convention Finals a minimum of. There are merely 2 issues status interior the way of the Knicks making it to finals, Miami and Boston.

the knicks are and average team in a below-average conference. i believe they have a shot. they need to get rid of the marbury/francis combo. i would personally trade francis to get a mediocre player and a first round pick this year.
