Should I bring winter clothes or spring clothes? What is the weather like in Japan in March?

All depends where you're going. Whilst Japan is a relatively small country, the weather conditions differ vastly from one end of the country to the other.
For example, today (March 11th) Nagoya hit a top of 6 degrees (Celcius), Tokyo 11 & Osaka 8. In Okinawa it was 17, Sapporo a chilly 0 (going through a cold period at the moment!).

For mid-March, I'd guess low to mid teens (Celcius). Mornings will be chilly, afternoons warmish, and evenings cold. Again, entirely dependant on WHERE you are going to be. I'd suggest using a weather site & watching as it gets closer to your departure (Yahoo weather's relatively accurate).

As the previous poster suggested, layering your clothes would be a good idea.

I would suggest a good jacket and some over sweaters. It is still quite cool during that time. I also sort of depends on where in Japan you are going. If up to the Northern part, you should bring some long underwear, too. Basically so you can wear layers and remove as necessary. If in the central part near Tokyo, a good Jacket and sweaters/sweat shirts. If you are going down to the south, it is still a little cool, but can get toasty if the sun is out. At present, it is very windy, so you might want to bring a wind-breaker. Mid to end of March is a real unstable time in terms of temperature, so you should be ready for cold to cool to very warm temperatures.

So, finally, I would recommend layering.

Hope you enjoy your trip.

Depends on where you go. Up here in Hokkaido, we got snow last night and rain this morning. It's about 0 C right now.

You can find the weather and weather forecast if you go to your page on My Yahoo! and customize the weather for whereever you are going in Japan.

In general, though, it should be sweater weather, but pack a few things that could be layered in case it gets really cold.

I suggest you take mostly light (but not summer) clothing, and also pack one or two thicker jackets just in case you go to the mountain regions, or when temperatures are still unstable.
