I empathize! I had the same problem for years. I started small, singing in front of people I knew and trusted. Friends and family can do a lot to boost your confidence. I also started singing out at church, loud as I felt like, during the congregational songs. I sang constantly, and worked on my pitch. Look online for voice exercises, or talk to a choir instructor. Eventually, I trusted myself enough to sing for strangers, and I loved it! My voice also benefited from all the practice I gave it. Although I was terrified to stand up there, it was something I had wanted so badly! And it felt good to do it, especially hearing the applause!
At some point, you are just going to have to bite the bullet and believe you are good. Trust the opinions of people who care about you, and sing! I hope the best for you, and congratulations on your part!

Absolutely the very best thing you can do is record your
singing voice over and over and then listen to it very
carefully. You'll be able to see the mistakes and make
improvements. As you have probably seen on American
Idol, everyone thinks they did a good job, even if they
were horrible. You need to be your own critic and make
sure that you don't loose control of your voice when
making it stronger or louder. This can be tricky and you
might want to take these recordings to someone who
can give you some good hints. Lots of luck in the
musical...it's so much fun and realize that if everyone
in the audience could sing, they'de all be up there
with you....so be secure in this.
