its 12^3 because you have to take into the account that there are actually three conversions that are taking place, not just one

when you convert it, you are acounting for

length * width * height

Yes, you need to divide by 12^3 to get cubic feet. Let us see how:

1 foot has 12 inches and so 1 square foot has 144 square inches. You can try it on a graph paper and see this. Similarly, when you have a cube of 1 foot dimensions, i.e. 1 foot by 1 foot by 1 foot, you have 12 X 12 X 12 cubic inches. Or the other way round.

You can check such things mentally or graphically or by putting small cubes together.

if the side of a cube is 12", the volume is 12^3 in^3.
but the side is also 1 foot, so the volume is 1ft^3.
so yes, divide by 12^3

You've got it RIGHT!
You DIVIDE cu. in. by 12^3 to get cu. ft.

But it is GOOD to ask if you don't fully understand,..

CUBIC measure is different than LINEAR measure. This is a very good reason to ALWAYS INCLUDE YOUR UNITS in every step while solving a problem.

12 in. = 1 ft.
144 sq. in. = 1 sq. ft.
1,728 cu. in. = 1 cu. ft.

BECAUSE:

(12 in.)^2 = (1 ft.)^2
(12 in.)^3 = (1 ft.)^3
