I own a 2003 Mazda Protege 5.

I am not sure if it is normal or not, but when I put the key in and turn it to the ACC position, after the 6 seconds when all the warning lights stay on, the Check Engine and the Oil Pressure lights stay on until i start the engine.

Once I start the engine however, they turn off.

I would like to know if this is normal, or if they should not be on EVER (except the 6-second period when all warning lights are on).

Right, I'm sorry, it's not ACC. It's the position where you have current to everything but you haven't started the engine yet.

Youre ok in the position prior to starting.
If the lights are on while the car is running I would get it checked out.
So, if the lights turn off when you start the car...youre fine.

In most cars the Check engine light and oil light will stay on in KOEO (Key On, Engine Off) Situations. This is because the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) is expecting to get may signals from various sensors when the key is on. With the key on and engine off these signals are either not there or out of their normal range, thus setting off the Check engine light.

As far as the oil light the ECU is expecting the engine to be running when the key is on and therefore making oil pressure. With the engine not running though there is no oil pressure and the oil light comes on.

So, as long as both of these lights go off after you start the car, everything is fine.

as far as i know they should stay on (until you start the car obviously) if youre really worried about it, take it to a mechanic or the mazda dealership and ask them about it :0)

Actually, you're rotating it to IGN (ignition).

Accessory is backwards one click.
There should be NO lights in acc.
