i understand that when the plan for Interstates was made in the Eisenhower administration, it was stated that at one out of every five miles had to be straight for an airplane to have a landing spot in case of an emergency.

Accident safety. The wheels on the cars must only have to turn a certain number of times with in a several mile radius.....
