The solution depends on whether you want to transfer all your music/photos at one time, or you wanna sync, or keep as less music on your laptop. It depends on what type of hardware you have, and under which operating system your computer is running. You need a physical link and a software link. Physical could be wired through a PC to PC "crossover cable"; or through a hub, switch, or multiple jack routers using a "patch cable". Wireless is included as a connection, might not logically mean it, but it is a physical hardware connection, this is the best way to connect your machines. After you have your physical link you need to find the two computers on the network and set sharing options and/or permissions. I recommend reading this:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/default.mspx

It will give you a pretty good idea of what you need. It has like 6 mini chapters, but they're really short and with graphics.

I recommend investing on a wireless (wireless router) network. although some security precautions need to be taken to ensure your privacy over the wireless network.

Quick transfer problems can also be temporarily solved by using a thumb drive, burning libraries to DVD, using an USB external hard drive.

You might find more solutions as you read on the features of the programs you use to hear music or watch photos, I know your question specifically asks for networking solution, but some people manage their music and photo libraries through devices like an Ipod or thumb drive.

Well you didn't give details so I will give a general answer.

The most common way would be to buy a network router, connect both computers to that router with ethernet cables. With a router you can also connect it to the Internet through a DSL modem or cable modem and share the the Internet connection for both computers. If the router also has wireless then you can connect the laptop to the router wirelessly instead of with a ethernet cable.

The cheapest way to network just two computers (doesn't work if you want to share Internet connection or you have more then two computers) is to buy what they can a cross over ethernet cable. You then connect one side to the desktop and one side to the desktop and you now have a network with the two computers.

the following steps apply to both computers: Double click My Computer, right click C: drive, select Security and Sharing, following the sharing wizard, make sure both settings are the same. At the end of Sharing Wizard, it'll give you several choices to use to apply to other computers, just select the last option. You'll now see your C: drive will have a hand icon holding your C: drive. Try to log on into other computer from one computer under Networking, if you can, you're done, if not try to temp disable Windows Firewall (if you have it enabled), and then try again.

as long as you have an area card indoors the computer and an open port on the router you could upload the computer computer on your community. If the computer is in a separate room removed from the router upload a instant card to the computer and run it making use of instant. That way there's no longer any could desire to run cable everywhere interior the abode. I even have 2 computers and 3 laptops and all of of them use instant to attach to the router.

if you have broadband internet and a router that you are connected to, just set the sharing modes.
if you have no other connections, use a cross-over cable and connect the two ethernet ports.
if you also have windows xp, then just run the wizard.

if all this is a pain, use a usb flash drive.
