How about cultural issues. Learning about culture is always fun.
Also education issues are always prevalent.

Culture Issues:
- Freedom of Religion
- Need for Cultural Education
- Mental Health and Culture
- Other countries besides U.S. have high rate of recovery from schizophrenia but in U.S. it is a life long disorder
- Need for traditional healing practices to work with common psychology to help with mental health. Statistics show these programs have high ratings.

Prison Industrial Complex
- America has most prisoners (two times actually) than any other country because our prisons produce money. We use prisoners to make products and it is good for the economy/creates jobs. Things such as the war on crime do not work (see statistics). We have extremely high recidivism rates, we don't want them to get better.

Educational Issues
- Free education
- Prayer in school and Affirmative Action (although I wouldn't reccomend either of those)
(your a student you can figure out these topics)

Need for Alternative Energy. Here's a neat fact to get you going. If all the reservations in the plains area had a wind field (with wind energy) that would make up 1/2 the energy used by the U.S. (per year). Think what we could produce if every major city had a windfield. And it would be green energy, good for the environment.

You could also do parenting practices (such as spanking).

Hope this helps get you started.

Last semester in my speech class, this girl did one on the issue with 'girls' and 'China'(??). She printed out a page for everyone to look at that had a 2 or 3 year old girl laying dead on a public street and everyone passed by her and did nothing because they(girls') weren't valued (or something like that). It was a whole day or two before some old man put her in a box and threw her in a dumpster. Anyway it was a good subject to bring some attention to instead of the usual stuff we keep hearing. Or maybe you could argue why alot of people adopt outside of the country when there's alot of kids to adopt here? ( Don't get me wrong; I think adopting ANY child is great, but on paper, it would be an easy, researchable topic)

You could try civil unions. Some good points:

1) Community Property - Without a civil union, if a couple owns property together and something happens to one. The other does not have clear right to the property like normal marriages
2) Insurance for the "spouse"
3) There is an implied power of attorney between spouses. My wife and I can speak for each other in the case of incapacitation.

'cfpops' has a great idea. Seems he's from down under. Like - - listen up - Does your chewin' gum lose it's flavor on the bedpost overnight? Does your mother say to fro' it out and you swaller it in spite? Or should you stick it under a table for further use? Which flavors stand up to the 'bedpost' test the best - or which brands. Make up a whole scenario of a study done on this.

I can't believe I actually typed this! 'cfpops' inspired me.

OY - 5 pages - triple space and try like h***!

One option is to pick a really silly subject and write a very funny argumentitive essay about it. This can parody the serious issues of our times.

e.g.
"Should bubblegum be left on the bedpost overnight"

If you pull it off, it might get you a really good grade. Hope you have a sense of humor!

The war in Iraq is too hot and too many people will right about it. So is immigration. How about ethanol production? Bush was just in Brazil discussing it this last week. And U.S newspapers were just discussing how meat prices will be going up in price because 20% of all U.S. produced corn will be going towards ethanol production and not towards animal feed.
