I'm sorry if this is gross. Every so often I'm listening to the radio and i hear this comercial for a tannery (leather) and they also advertise that they have synthetic urine to "clense and detoxify your system" . So what is it really used for and is it legal?

If you come to know the natural names that you have to call for the chemical formulations we swallow every day, you won't be surprised enough to ask this question. Keep an objective mind in trying to understand. Urine is a chemical compund of water and several other trace elements thrown out of the body because they are surplus to requirement for the time being or the tissues supposed to absorb them are inefficient in their function. Except for bacterial content, everything else in urine is a usable commodity.

Some leather tanning processes do require urine (which consists of ammonia, urea and a few other metabolic wastes) or at least some form of urea nitrogen. It doesn't surprise me. They may have meant that it could be used for home leather tanning.

I don't know if it's illegal, but it probably doesn't work. You can't "cleanse and detoxify your system" by drinking anything.
