I am from Moldova and my maternal grandparents were born in Besarabia Romanian side of Moldova. The other set was born in Ribnitsa the Russian side. My grandpa served in the Romanian army from 1930-1932 from the age of 18-20.
The Romanians rewarded him for his service by: killing half of his family in the Romanian death train rides during the war, confiscating his land and livestock, burning downs his synagogue, and sending him to the ghettos of Ribnitsa. He managed to escape and join the Soviet Army to fight the Romanians and the Nazis. He participated during the Soviet invasion Romania to destroy their Nazi sympathizers and drive of the Germans.
