it depends on what field you go into, what your doing. This is a very broad question.
If your doing concept art you'd be responsible for creating... well concept art, that's suitbile for the mood, theme, and style of what ever your working on. There's also Digital artists who paint backgrounds for cartoons, or textures for 3D work.
figure out which field your interested in first then start exploring from there.
