I would define addiction as some kind of behavior that a person partakes in to an extreme that is harmful to their body, or mind or both. Yes there are always withdrawal symptoms although they vary for the individual and the addiction. IE my husband is a compulsive gambler ( his main addiction) He has lost everything because of it including now his family. His symptoms were mostly emotional but also some physical such as depression, anxiety, and severe mood swings. He also developed an alcohol addiction and a pornography addiction. So there is also a real high chance of cross addiction with any addiction. He also shows most of the signs of a sociopath (which is very comforting). Addiction is a horrible thing and trying to live with someone with one is even worse.

To me addiction is putting a chemical into your body to change the way you are feeling in an excessive manner. Taking a substance for pain or medical reason as prescribed is not addiction. With true addiction problems will arise with your daily living and with the outside world(i.e. trouble on the job, law, family) Definitely withdrawal to a substance indicates addiction. Addiction may manifest itself in all manner of ways such as withdrawing from people or to partying every day. Paranoia usually accompanies addiction and so many other neuroses and mental and physical maladies. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck --it is a duck. Denial is the most common trait of an addicted person thus making help or intervention also impossible.

Yes, withdrawal would be a symptom. So would not giving up something that is putting your health or lifestyle at risk. The inability to say no to something you want.
