The cables and router can handle 100 Mbps. What you need depends on whether you have a network at your apartment and how you plan to use it. If you are going to transfer lot of data (as in large files) between the computers of your network (not Internet); then go for the fastest (even Gigabit) network. If the computers are isolated with a need to share the data occasionally; then make sure that your network is faster than your Internet connection.

The higher the number the faster the connection. If you are thinking upgrade. Remember that speed is $. Speed is referred to as bandwidth by the teckies/sales people you will talk to. Most will not know anything more than scripted Q&A.

Big files and attachments to move across the internet. High speed and lots of bandwith (gigabit) $$$$.
Gaming and video std DSL or cable will do. Cable is generaly faster than DSL, but your advanced options from the user side are more limited with cable than DSL.

Modern ethernet is generally 100mbps nowadays - however it depends on the network card in your PC, and the speed of the device you connect it to.
