School uniforms have several advantages. They eliminate the distraction of competitive dressing, and studies show that overall grades improve in schools which require uniforms (but not in those where uniforms are optional). This is probably because they create a more serious academic atmosphere, and enable students to express themselves through their studies and writing instead of the superficiality of clothing and shoes. Also, they remove some of the more obvious difference between students of different socioeconomic levels, since you don't need to buy as many outfits (just two, really, one in the wash), and many schools provide uniforms at no cost to those who can't afford them. They also create more of a school spirit and school pride.

In retrospect I wish that I had a uniform rule in school. It would have made it so much easier. No one would pick on you for not having the "in trends" or tease you for wearing something that your mom picked out. You all looked the same, so there was basically more thought put towards schooling rather than fashion and what the person sitting next to you is wearing. Besides that, its cheaper.

reduces the ability to distinguish between rich and poor
generates pride in the school as when you are wearing a uniform people recognise that
is low cost in comparison to having a 'fashion' wardrobe
develops an identity for the wearer as being part of that 'group'
