Anything that has oxalic acid in the ingredient list works surprisingly well. I believe the product "Zud" is still available at some home supply places. If you can't find it locally, you can get it here: http://www.amazon.com/RECKITT-BENCKISER-REC-00750-Cleaner/dp/B000BOJ934

Your local bike shop will have products that will take rust right off most metals. The thing is though, rust is an erosion of the metal so most of the time there are empty places left instead of rust. I used this stuff on a bike that had a lot of rust and afterwards there was no rust but the stainless steel wasn't shiny anymore. Regardless, it looked better than with the rust.

I think there is also a product called CLR you can get at Walgreens but I don't know how well it works.

Steel wool will take rust off of most metal items. If you are looking for a chemical to remove rust then you can try "The Works" "Rust Lime & Calcium Remover", you can buy it at Home Depot or Lowes.

Soak it in white vinegar. Vinegar is acetic acid and acids act on iron metal removing the oxidized or rusted metal. Then clean between soaks with Brillo Pad for a really good removal of the rust.

you are able to sand it or cord wheel it off. ensure you get all of it or it is going to come again. as quickly because it truly is all off, you are able to both paint it or placed some type of preservative, like oil. worked 12 years as a machinist

use a steel brush, scrub away the rust, than apply rust remover available from most D.I.Y store. but please be careful, as it is acid.
