I need to write a persuasive essay. 1000 min and I need to show my view point on an issue and then counterattack the possible opposite views/arguement. I was thinking about whether or not to legalize assisted suicide but I don't know if I want to get into that. This is for junior year. Help me guys.

hmmm well I do feel strongly on a lot of topics. Religion ( but I don't think that's proper for public school), abortion, assisted suicide. I don't feel too strong about the war in Iraq to write a 1000 words on it. But what is Zero Population Growth, sounds intresting.

Thanks guys, these are great!

How about cultural issues. Learning about culture is always fun.
Also education issues are always prevalent.

Culture Issues:
- Freedom of Religion (You said you are interested in religion. What about freedom of religion for all groups of people. See Native American Freedom of Religion Act, there are lots of issues surrounding this topic).
- Need for Cultural Education
- Mental Health and Culture
- Other countries besides U.S. have high rate of recovery from schizophrenia but in U.S. it is a life long disorder
- Need for traditional healing practices to work with common psychology to help with mental health. Statistics show these programs have high ratings.
- Get rid of Columbus Day
- Understanding intergenerational trauma (how descendants of the holocaust or of Native Americans can experience pain about traumas that occurred in the past)

Prison Industrial Complex
- America has most prisoners (two times actually) than any other country because our prisons produce money. We use prisoners to make products and it is good for the economy/creates jobs. Things such as the war on crime do not work (see statistics). We have extremely high recidivism rates, we don't want them to get better.

Educational Issues
- Free education
- Prayer in school and Affirmative Action (although I wouldn't reccomend either of those)
(your a student you can figure out these topics)

Need for Alternative Energy. Here's a neat fact to get you going. If all the reservations in the plains area had a wind field (with wind energy) that would make up 1/2 the energy used by the U.S. (per year). Think what we could produce if every major city had a windfield. And it would be green energy, good for the environment.

You could also do parenting practices (such as spanking).

Hope this helps get you started.

Any topic that is current and debated hotly will produce lots of websites/blogs/arguments on both sides. This input will be very helpful for a persuasive essay. Legalized assisted suicide is good, so is abortion, right to life, euthanasia, legalization of marijuana, war in Iraq, etc.

I would suggest that you pick something you feel strongly about, just to see what the counter-arguments are like!

Hope this helps!

To write 100 min you need to choose to write about something you feel strongly about.

Assisted suicide is certainly controversial.

What is something you feel strongly about? (1000 is a lot.)
Divide it in half, since half is the pro/the for and half is the con/the against. Still 500 words is a lot.

Is there a current topic you feel strongly about? Perhaps the war in Iraq?

Check the headlines and choose.

Well, I would suggest you pick up a newspaper or some online news and just look for a story and see what you find interesting.
I think assisted suicide is a really good topic, but there are tons of others of you want one -- things like...
Should there be a two-state partition i, the isreal/palestine conflict?
Are animal rights a good idea?
Should everyone be required to drive hybrid cars?
Do we produce too much garbage/waste too much?
How can we improve healthcare?
Should we discourage monopolies from forming?
Should kids be required to learn second languages in school?
Should humans reduce the rate we reproduce for the sake of quality of life and the planet?

...and so on. good luck!

I did one on "Zero Population Growth". That's not as emotional as abortion or legalizing assisted suicide, but it's really interesting and you can get two good opposing arguments going with it.

You could write about your viewpoint on the war in Iraq, or if you want a narrower focus, how about the issue of military recruiting in the high schools?

Well, you could do the ever popular abortion and do the viewpoints of that.

Censorship in the media. According to the constitution, there is freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Is there a limit to this? Should they put a limit to this?

Good Luck!

personally i think assisted suicide is a good topic, but if you don't want to get into that topic, you could go for easier but still important topics such as teachers' strikes, abortion and grafiti as art.
