Is there perhaps a software program out there that can make is so the file is impossible to retrieve?

I would first open the document and delete what ever is written on it, then write something new in the same document, then "Save" your changes.. After the file has been saved with the new (and not what you are worried about someone finding) information. Then delete it, and then go to your trash can and delete the altered file again there.. I think then even if someone tried to retrieve the file, they would just find the changed file and read what was last save in there.

The Bucc is right. you could write a file which would keep on growing until it filled up any frre/unused spaced then delete that file. The may be a program which would clear all unused sectors.
