under the settings for the program... it should have an option that says something like "show icon in tray" you can also remove other icons the same way.

You CAN'T put it in there. Only program itself does. Why do you want to put it there for? Do you want to have the icon to be ready to use without going through layers of windows in order to click that FireFox icon on the desktop? If that the case, I can show you this trick, but won't be at the system tray. This is call Quick Launch toolbar. This bar is located mostly next to the Start button. Right click the Task Bar (the bottom bar next to Start button), select Toolbars, then Quick Launch. You can drag and drop any program you want to be in here, without have to use the Desktop icon or going through layers of menu under Start. Right click and select Delete to remove any unwanted ones. To drop one, hold down the Ctrl key while drag that program and drop onto Quick Launch bar and release Ctrl key.

i'm no expert, but usually, you cannot add things to the system tray (its "official" name, fyi, which doesn't matter but i figured i'd let you know...heh) unless the program allows it as a setting. which i don't think firefox does. try searching for a "firefox system tray plug-in" or something. good luck!

PS did you know, by the start button, there is something called the quicklaunch toolbar? it looks kinda like the system tray, but it's on the other side. if all else fails, try this:

>> right-hand click on the taskbar and make sure that "lock the taskbar" is UNCHECKED, and "show quick launch" is CHECKED. this is necessary to add a link.

>> go to your desktop, start menu, wherever you have a firefox link, and drag-&-drop it on the quick launch bar (hope that makes sense)

>> now, there should be a link there. go back to the start menu properties and lock the taskbar to save this. now, you can use it liek any other link.

(PS that is only for winXP. i'm assuming you have it...other versions of windows have a similar procedure, though.)

good luck, & sorry i'm confusing!! x]
