My period has been late now for 6 days. I took a home pregnancy test yesterday (ClearBlue +/- ) It came up as a faint positive, so I was pretty excited. I went to the clinic afterwards to be sure, and the dr. made me take another urine sample, but that test came out negative, and she then referred me to the lab for monday to get a blood test. Was there a reason the hpt came out positive but the dr's came out negative? and has anyone else had this problem before?

There are many reasons for the contradictory results.
1. The timing of the urine collected. (Early morning specimen is the best)
2. Some of the medicines you take normally will interfere with the results.
3. If you are fitted with any IUD
4. The quality of the test reagents and the cards.
5. the vessel used for collection of urine might have been contaminated.
6. The number of days u have missed. (Some tests would show positive within 2 or 3 days and some other brands would show only after 10 days.)

It is usually best to use first morning urine..I am assuming when you went to the clinic it wasn't first morning urine?? If not then it was probably too diluted to get a + reading...Early pregnancies can get a lot of false neg results because there is not enough hcg in your urine yet or if you have been drinking throughout the day, is diluted....a blood test is much more accurate at this point....which I see you are going to take on Monday....If you got a positive on one test then you are most likely pregnant...Good Luck!

It is very rare to get a false positive.
HPT's and the urine tests at the DR's office come up positive if it detects a certain amount of the hormone in your urine. Not all tests measure for the same amount. It could be that the test you took at home was more sensitive then the one at the dr's office. I know a lot of women who have gotten a + at home and the urine test at the dr's was negative.

I would pick up another test, and take it 1st thing in the morning.

Check out this website before going to the store- it will tell you the hormone levels for each test!

25. My HPT was positive, but the urine test at my doctor's was negative. Huh? Urine-based pregnancy tests vary widely in sensitivity. Often a home-based test (HPT) is much more sensitive than the kind your doctor's office uses. (Often doctors or clinics use tests that are sensitive to 50-100 mIU/mL of hCG; most home tests detect a level of 15-50 mIU/mL of hCG. See the HPT Overview for various HPT sensitivities.)

Practically speaking, this usually works just fine. By the time a woman suspects pregnancy and confirms with her doctor, she has usually missed her period, is farther along in her pregnancy, and has higher levels of hCG in her urine-- so a less-sensitive test will suffice. On the other hand, women who are trying to conceive and/or monitor their fertility are often much more in tune with their cycles and the potential for pregnancy, and therefore test earlier with more sensitive tests. So this scenario is actually fairly common. Because HPT's are extremely reliable, you should consider yourself pregnant following a positive test. Your doctor should retest your urine again in a few days, after your hCG has had time to increase.

You might not be far enough along to be produceing enough hormons to show positive all the time. First thing in the morning is the best time to test. Wait a little while and try again. If it's still negitive and you have your period next month, then you might have had a miscarrage.

yes sweetie and sorry to say it didn't come out good i had a miscarriage about 7 days later. But it could also be that you drink 2 hours before the test and your urine was diluted,. or that your HCG is not built up enough yet, i wish you the best

the chance of having a false positive is far greater than of having a false negative. That is why multiple tests are advised when you test positive...that is the same for any tests (HIV, Cancer, Pregnancy etc)

The pregnancy tests look for a curtain horomone that is produced when pregnancy occurs. Probably what happened was your body was producing that horomone either from your period coming, or maybe if you took Plan B / Birth control pills.

Just a theory, ask your doctor

nicely frequently they do an ultrasound to "double" examine on the 1st pass to. And if there is any question of being pregnant being there they are able to do yet another ultrasound. it particularly is probably she is pregnant lower back as you could be quite fertile following an abortion. Have her try yet another try interior the am with first morning urine.
