leprosy. sounds gross, but, you will be amazed at the history and where they held the lepers (in a village called carterville in Louisiana and it is still opened today for touring). leprosy was later cured with simple antibiotics from a dr. hansen.

How about cultural issues. Learning about culture is always fun.
Also education issues are always prevalent.

Culture Issues:
- Freedom of Religion
- Need for Cultural Education
- Mental Health and Culture
- Other countries besides U.S. have high rate of recovery from schizophrenia but in U.S. it is a life long disorder
- Need for traditional healing practices to work with common psychology to help with mental health. Statistics show these programs have high ratings.
- Get rid of Columbus Day
- Understanding intergenerational trauma (how descendants of the holocaust or of Native Americans can experience pain about traumas that occurred in the past)

Prison Industrial Complex
- America has most prisoners (two times actually) than any other country because our prisons produce money. We use prisoners to make products and it is good for the economy/creates jobs. Things such as the war on crime do not work (see statistics). We have extremely high recidivism rates, we don't want them to get better.

Educational Issues
- Free education
- Prayer in school and Affirmative Action (although I wouldn't reccomend either of those)
(your a student you can figure out these topics)

Need for Alternative Energy. Here's a neat fact to get you going. If all the reservations in the plains area had a wind field (with wind energy) that would make up 1/2 the energy used by the U.S. (per year). Think what we could produce if every major city had a windfield. And it would be green energy, good for the environment.

You could also do parenting practices (such as spanking).

Hope this helps get you started.

how about researching an individual.

i taught history in high school and let the kids do an interest project and we looked at individuals who have helped shape the world, or inspire others. a lot of the kids really enjoyed researching about someone they wouldnt normally look at.

some examples could include -
Nelson Mandela - a man who went against racism in South Africa and because of it went to jail. when he got out they made him leader of the country
Rosa Parks - in racist america she refused to stand and let a white person sit down in her seat. because of it she went to jail and proclaimed a hero for standing up for her belief
Muhamid Ali - refused to go to the Vietnam War when he was drafted because he said he had no problems with Vietnamese people. they sent him to jail and he lost years in his prime as a boxer

there just some ideas....there are websites too where u can find info about interesting ppl

good luck

The Rape of Nanking/Nanjing.

An estimated 100,000-300,000 chinese woman, children, and men were raped by the Japanese in 1938. They tortured them and many where killed.

It's a very gruesome topic that no one has any idea about. Hardly anyone has heard of it.

Good Luck!
