I don't see why Maronites have to be presidents. I don't see why Lebanon must have a Christian president, I think it is time we change this stupid system and allow a Shiaa to be prime minister and a maronite to be speaker of parliament.and anyone to be president...enough of this stupid religious power sharing formula...Why do we think only Maronites can preserve Lebanon current system..this is so dumb...no more, agree?

I agree with you but in many countries the level of religion has been made so it is the same in Lebanon and as we have religion like Christians, Sunnis, Shiites and Druz it is important to split the country as the countries govenment is now. Another thing is that the power is with the PM in Lebanon it goes the same with India, Nepal and other European countries so the Predident in Lebanon has not the major power.

God Bless Lebanon

Let me begin by saying that I am a not a Maronite.

This should happen only after the Lebanese System becomes totally secular. And to have a secular state, you should have a state to begin with. Do Shiites and sunnies agree on secular law?

I mean when the civil marriage was proposed like in 99 or 2000 (don't recall anymore), everybody especially Muslims were against it. It wasn't even obligatory, but rather optional!!

Either you go with a totally secular system or forget it. Is this a priority right now? Besides not only the president "preserves" Lebanon. We already have a non-existing tasteless Maronite president.

Right now if this happens, Lebanon will become another Syria, Jordan, Egypt or name whatever any other Arabic Country.

Your question is "Isn't it the time ... " My answer is No. The time is not right.

Kingo i am not maronite as welll, and let me tell you something why dont all the shi'as, sunnis, druz, christians be candidates and may the most voted for WIN. Its not a fact that a Shi'a must become a president becuase im sure if they were to become another war would evolve... not becuase shi'a nope but because many other people are staring at the chair and they obviously need it so much...

As smutty said" No its not time" our current president is hated by his own sector, so please be an open minded guy before you talk, we should clear the hateness of each others religion (you are from where and you are from where thingy) then we can have a diversity of non-maronite presidents..

Im gonna be president and im not maronite the first female president in lebanon.,,, Wait and see :D

Lol, you know, by saying Shiaa instead of Muslim, you aren't being any better than what you're stating. I do not think a Lebanese president should be elected based on what his religious backround is, but rather, based on what and how much he could contribute to the well-being of the country. At the end of the day, if a president is doing good for his country, does it really matter what religious sect he comes from? Be it Christian, Muslim or any other religion, it makes no difference. What does make a difference, however, is the dedication and loyalty that he devotes to his country and that he actually sees his proposed actions through instead of just making empty promises to the public as most lebanese politicians are known to do.

I'm not Maronite,But i think if they allow a Shiaa to be a prime Minister, then the Sunnies and durz would have a problem with that and so would the citizens!!!
They would keep nagging and pushing each others
who and who's better to be the president, just becuz of their
religion!!
So ur answer to ur Question is no i dont agree!!

I'm christian but as you all know I'm not living in Lebanon, and I agree with Smutty.
To change the rules, that are in the Lebanese Constitution, first at all you need a secular country. Lebanon is not that. Rules can be changed by the popular vote only through a plebiscite. But for that, (politically speaking) everyone has to forget which religion each belongs to. Is that possible nowadays in Lebanon.?? I think it is not. As Smutty said, it is not the moment. That wont be possible till more young people with open minds support their own ideas and show to the elder generation that a modern Lebanon needs changes, democratic ones, without care about religions. After that, you would be able to vote for the"person" not for the religion till now, and then the democracy will be total, not till now that a president is 3 more years in his charge, because "someone" that is not lebanese, said it.

Who set up this system?Any sect that gets prominance to the exclusion of all others is flawed.Surely in a free society the people are the ones who should choose who governs them.Unless the ruling sect are a minority, whereby they are unwilling to give up the reigns of power. To cling onto what is virtually a gerrymander.
Now if the president is merely a figurehead it's fine. Not if they wield any power over the govt.

I am maronite and I feel that we are very endangered right now in lebanon. we need a guarantee for our own survival.
not this president, but a proper open minded and fair president who will not work for one side but for all Lebanese.

Amen (and I'm maronite).

but to do this you need to get rid of all the present gang.
when you have proper qualified politicians governing, and not accidental ones who have to keep the inheritance intact for their children and children's children. It will become clear that this system belongs to another era and we may then switch to a " may the best candidate win" regardless.

That "dumb system" you refer to is the Lebanese Constitution.

This is just my opinion, love it or leave it, but I can't think of anything Shi'ites actually contribute to Lebanon's wellbeing and prosperity. If you can think of anything, let me know.
