I've played as a paladin on WoW for over a year. I've been all 3 specs and I've been mixed specs.
You have to be VERY careful if you are going to mix your specs. It is very easy to gimp a paladin. If you do mix specs my suggestion is, DO NOT put points in all 3 areas, pick 2 areas and put most of your points in only one of them and no more than 11 or 12 points in the other.
As I have said, I have tried specs all ways. Paladins are most effective when they stick to only one tree, the only reason to mix em up is if a beginning stat in another tree is an "absolute must-have" to you.
There is no "best" tree--which tree you choose depends on what role you prefer.
Holy Tree-- A full holy spec, who knows what they are doing (ie spam "flash of light"-most mana efficient heal in game-not full heals) can be just as good as a priest in healing. Your role in instances will be main healer (or off healer in cases that there is a priest in your group). You are an awesome healer, however your dps sucks. If you ever expect to level the paladin, dont go solo-do instances- or do go solo, but have massive patience. As the saying goes--It takes an army to take down a pally, but it takes an army of pallies to take down anyone. All pallies should have 2 sets of gear- a healing set and a dps set- but the healing set is most important for this spec. Stats that you want for your healing set are stamina, intellect, plus healing and mana regeneration, squeeze in spell crit--it doesnt matter if you have to wear cloth to get these stats. For dps set, see either set below under the other specs.
Retribution spec--Your role in groups will be dps--they may also ask you to off-tank or off-heal--your dps WILL NOT be on par with a hunter, rogue or caster, however it is decent. Your dps in this spec is HIGHLY dependent on your mana, as most of your dmg is holy dmg (ret aura, seal crusader judged, then use and judges damaging seals like righteousness, using consecrate and crusader strike as often as u can). Solo leveling is decent for you, although i wouldnt reccomend you take on more than one or 2 mobs at a time. Healing set see above (as all pallies should have one). DPS set stats you want are intellect, mana regen, +spell dmg/healing, spell crit rating and squeeze in stamina, spell hit rating and strength where you can--unlike the healing set you do want to use the highest level of armor you can (mail through 40 plate after).
Protection--Prot can be a very cool spec. It is very hard for you to be killed and as long as mobs are hitting you (not someone else) your dps matches or goes above retribution's dps. In groups, you are the tank, the more mobs you can handle hitting you the better. Make sure to use righteous fury, avengers sheild, consecration and righteous defense. Your DPS is HIGHLY reliant on YOU being hit. If you are not the tank in your group expect your dps to be low as many things will not proc. Another good thing is that this spec is not as reliant on mana pool as the other two specs. When soloing it is possible to take on 3-4 mobs your level at the same time--more things hitting you the more times talents proc. Or you can take on elites by yourself if they arent above your level. Or you can take on regular mobs above your level. If you fight just one mob your level at a time, it is possible to almost never take dmg--use 1h and shield, judge light and use light while fighting. Use 1h and shield in instances and in situations you need to take less dmg--use 2h when you want to deal more dmg. This spec requires you to have several sets of gear. Of course, even now, you STILL need a healing set (see above)--cuz thats what other players expect of you sometimes and they sometimes dont care what spec you are. Your dps set differs from retributions dps set--you want high armor, stamina, strength, plus crit rating, squeeze in agility, intellect, mana regen, hit rating. Your tanking set will be a mixture of your dps set and some + defense, +parry, +dodge gear. As a tank you may need to collect resistance sets together as well, according to whatever instances you are running.
Hope that helps. :)

because of the fact you have no longer positioned risk-free practices on your record, i've got faith risk-free practices is out of the question (even nevertheless it somewhat is the spec i like the main). in spite of the indisputable fact that, it additionally looks you're no longer raiding jointly with your paladin, because of the fact you suggested therapeutic your self as a dps or using ranged assaults as a healer - via this assertion in basic terms i assume you're in general doing quests (nevertheless leveling, possibly?). For questing, i could %. retribution out of the two, yet holy is larger in case you propose to point by way of dungeons as a results of quicker queues. additionally, you need to think of in case you want to raid - you have plenty extra desirable possibilities to raid as a healer (holy) than a dps (retribution). Whichever you decide on, i could advise sticking to the spec you want to raid with - you would be taught plenty via using the comparable spec from low tiers. -- I had to coment on the previous poster - you get on the spot queues in basic terms as a tank (prot), healers get quicker queues than dps yet can nevertheless take a couple of minutes.

read the discriptions and decide what works best for you. if you wanna be able to heal better, keep going for holy. retribution will up your damage done though.
