Why is the number 4 unlucky in Japan?

It's because "shi" (the pronounciation for 4) is part of the word to die. or "shinu". So since it can be related to death, it's unlucky~

4 has two sounds - yon and shi. shi means death.

9 is also unlucky because "ku" means suffering
