"I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt is a beautiful song about a break up like that. From the 70s there's The Doobie Brothers' "What a Fool Believes."
Billy Bragg's "The Saturday Boy" is great; U2's "All I Want is You," too.
I might be able to think of some more apt ones with a little more information on how well the people know each other & whether or not they've been involved.
Maybe more poems and songs are about unrequited love than about any other subject. But there are so many varieties of this experience that's it's hard to be sure whether any particular one would strike the right chord.
Note: I was writing this when someone else posted the Bonnie Raitt song; I promise we thought of it independently - so maybe it's a pretty good candidate for the song you're looking for.
