I know alot of people will tell you to watch them in numbered order, but for a first-timer it's actually easier to go by the release dates. That's because the characters are established in the movies first released... while the story starts in episode 1, you really do need to know a little about the characters, spacecraft, the role of the senate and various planets to understand alot of it.
It's also cool to watch in order of the release dates as the spec.effects get better and better - not worse and worse lol.

I don't know why this is even a question. Watch them in the correct order: 1 - 6. George Lucas has stated MANY times that that is the order he prefers them to be experienced in. Also, he has said that he started with episode 4 because technologically it was the simplest. Also, when you start with ep 1, just let it roll over you, don't critisize, or remember what people said about it. Might even read the books first if your into reading. They fill in much of what the movies breeze over. So, watch in this order, Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Reveng of the Sith, A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi.

There are 6 installments, not 5. I personally think you should watch them in order from 1-6. You see Anakin go from an innocent boy to a Jedi knight who is seduced by the Dark Side to Darth Vader. You don't get that when you watch them in the order they were released.

Their number order would be better, as it'd explain how it all started.
By the way, there are 6 movies ,not 5 :
Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith
A New Hope
Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi

Watch in order of release dates. If I had to sit through Episode I without knowing there was point to the torture...well, I might not make it through the movie.

There are 6 and you should watch by release dates.
4, then 5, then 6, then 1, 2, & 3.
More surprises that way.

number order is probably easier because it is in chronological order but you will still be fine if you watch them the by realese date.

Because "Star Wars" is a chronological story starting with the
discovery of Aniken Skywalker and ending with the final end
of the evil emperor and the Sith, you should definitely watch
all SIX episodes in numerical order. (There are six, not five
episodes)
