seems I almost have more thistles, dandelions, and stuff I don't recognize (yay! new weed species in my yard!) than lawn. Will take me forever to spot weed kill, and besides, I don't really like putting petrochemicals on my garden. Is there such a thing as a commercially-available "green' weedkiller, which won't harm animals that eat it, but will kill weeds?

Actually, he's right - urine works. As done cheap plain old Heinz white vinegar, it just takes a few days.

Its pretty much a manual labour thing. You have to decide what you want--green lawn or perfect textured lawn. Perfect texture requires that you pull out all offending non-grass plants. Green means simply that you have a healthy coloured lawn that has mixed species. Dandelions and other weed plants will grow at a different rate compared to classic grasses, so they will annoy you with uneven shaggy looking growth. All you can do is be vigilant about getting the suckers pulled up--roots and all, before they go to seed. If you want a lawn that is resistant to drought, seed with a good percentage of white clover. It stays green well into the fall., and in dry weather when grasses tend to go dormant. If I had kids and a lawn--i'd want the yard to be conducive to play--which would mean no bloody pest/herbicides and hopefully no prickly plants. All comes down to manual labour again. And don't get me started about dog poop...!
