In the same way that championships are represented by title belts, the "Money in the Bank" is represented by a briefcase carried by the winner supposedly containing the contract which is to be cashed in for the title match.

Before the contract is cashed in, it can be defended in matches (ladder or not) in the same way a championship would be.

It's a contract that allows whoever wins the match 1 title shot at any time in the next year. They call it "Money in the Bank" because if you win, you get a guaranteed title shot. No one can take it away, kind of like "money in the bank."

No money in the case.

It's called money in the bank because you 'cash in' the contract for a title match.

Plus it makes for a good weapon, as Edge has shown us.
