Artist that draw or sketch sometimes don't have their signature or date on their work. So how did they keep track of when they completed their works?
And if you are an artist, how do you sign your works. Do you put your name and date, or just name?

Yes, you will almost NEVER find an unsigned work by an artist. It's the last touch on a painting or drawing that says, "I was here, and I created this."
As for dating, I never do anymore. It's not as necessary as a signature. I think if it's a good piece of art, why does it matter when it was done? But it always matters who did it: you!

Look very closely at an Escher work. You'll find an mce somewhere usually hidden in a stairway brick or curve. Most artists keep a diary of the work they do with a title and date. You get know your work intimately so when you see the title you know the work.

I sign my work on paper with my name, the title and the date under the drawing. My lithographs are done with the title, edition number, name and date.My paintings are signed and dated as well as a sticker on the back with the title, medium, size, and date.
