adult = a
child = c
(a + c = 70
(10a + 2c = 540

Substitution:
a = 70 - c
10(70 - c) + 2c = 540
700 - 10c + 2c = 540
-8c = 540 - 700
-8c = -160
c = -160/-8
c = 20

a = 70 - 20
a = 50

A is number of Adult tickets sold
C is number of Child tickets sold

A + C = 70 total tickets sold
10A + 2C = 540 total money from tickets

A + C = 70 means that 2A + 2C = 140 which you then subtract from 10A + 2C = 540

You get 8A = 400, meaning A = 50
Substitute for A in A + C = 70 and you get 50 + C = 70, which means that C = 20.

Check to make sure it works:
10 * 50 + 2 * 20 = 500 + 40 = 540

Tickets sold were
50 Adult tickets
20 Child tickets

system of equations

10a+2c=540
a+c=70 (a=70-c)

now plug in 70-c as a in the first equation

10(70-c)+2c=540
700-10c+2c=540
700-8c=540
-8c=-160
c=20

now plug 20 in for c in the second equation

20+a=70
a=50

and there you are
