wouldn't "knife control" help save lives, and if people had to apply for knife permits then criminals couldn't get knives.

I've got mixed emotions. I'm mad as hell, and at the same time, I'm laughing at your queations.

No, the federal government should NOT "do something" about the violence. Each individual is responsible for his/her own actions> That means, among other things, being NON violent. People who commit violent acts must be locked up.
Local governments must take action to stop the violence. They know one helluva lot more than the federal government about what the people in their community need. The federal government is waaay too far removed from these problems.

KNIFE CONTROL??? 'You mean I gotta register that cutlery set I've got in the kitchen?? How's about that baseball bat in the garage?? Or that scissors in my wife's sewing room?? Or the hammer in the tool box??

You WERE kidding us with your question, right??

No, I don't think "knife control" would solve the problem of our nation's overwhelming crime rate. If we outlaw knives, then we would find ourselves outlawing anything sharp, and we would probably work our way into a "police state". I think the answer lies in public awareness, i.e., education, addressing the drug problems, gang violence, and people getting away with what they do with a "slap on the wrist". When there is a crime committed with any weapon, let's say a knife, the penalties should carry stronger jail time. I just don't know what we are going to do with the overcrowded jails.

If knives presented as much of a danger as guns, then yes, certain limits on knives should be created. Unfortunately, not many people would be killed in a drive-by knifing, whereas drive-by shootings have no problem causing injury and death. In Cub Scouts, you need to earn your "whittling chip" before you can whittle at scout events. The reason for this is that we don't want kids who haven't learned the safe use of knives to be using them. Requiring a permit and training for gun owners would do the same thing. But I guess it's too much for the NRA to agree with the fact that gun owners should know how to properly use and store guns.

Well.... It's actually been proposed by the Brits... Really... the idea was to out law all butcher and other large kitchen knifes... One of the stories behind why the Chinese use chopsticks is that one Emperor outlawed *all* knifes, except one per village. So all food was cut into bite sized pieces at a community kitchen. Or so the story goes.

Alas, how will I cut my steak? And, besides, outlaw knives, and then only the criminals will have knives.
Here is a novel idea: why doesn't the government just outlaw studpidity.

At last, no more cooking for the family !
( no knives to work with)
Wait , won't all the restaurants have to shut down too ?
The only thing we will be able to eat is PB&J spread with a fork !

Please tell me this is an attempt to point out the fallacy of Gun Control laws. If it isn't, why not outlaw fitness equipment as well. Criminals have been know to work out so they could beat up their victims.

Interesting that you should post this.. I just watched a show all about how violence has increased alarmingly in the U.S. in recent years.

I think it is time our government concentrated on saving our country, our society and our way of life. Instead we are embroiled in a useless war across the sea.. no one wants to be there but Bush & co.

Time to spend those billions in our country to help OURSELVES... or one day Bush will turn around and it will be too late.

Not that he will care.. he will be living in Dubois by then.
