In a time when Europe was tearing itself apart Henry kept the country together. By pure ruthlessness (as in the March of Faith), and the abolition of the monasteries for the treasury, no one could accuse him of lacking courage which he also showed in battles against the French which he won.

His intense desire to have a male heir was, in dynastic terms, a necessity for future stability.

He lived in tough times and as a legacy of his rule his country survived the purges of "Bloody Mary" to emerge again as "Merrie England" in the "Golden Age" of Elizabeth I and Shakespear.

That was, I should say, pretty effective.

If nothing else, the guy was persistent!

In the search for a male heir, he had six wives. Only one of those wives produced a male (a sickly little one who didn't live very long).

In the meantime, he managed to get himself excommunicated from the Catholic Church - what does the guy do? If the Catholics don't like divorce, I'll create my own church! (Tenacious, there is another good word for him!)

What really made him effective? He didn't let small things like beheading and divorce and religion get in the way of what he really wanted! He was focused & goal oriented.

I hope your World History Teacher is as colorful and interesting as mine was! Good luck on your paper!

He was quite intelligent and well educated.
He was sneaky and skilled at politics.
He was ruthless and single-minded.
He held absolute power in England.
I'd say all those attributes would make a person "effective."
