If the stand is made for a standard 40 gal tank it should be fine but ,keep in mind, a 40 gallon aquarium filled with water and decorations is going to weigh over 400 pounds.

Well, often, a reptile tank has different dimensions than a fish aquarium, but if this stand were for a standard 40 gallon aquarium, then you would just need to buy a 40 gallon aquarium. A 40 gallon aquarium measures, with certain variations, 48" x 12" x 16". Just measure the stand for its dimensions and then measure the tank to see if it will fit on the stand before you decide to buy it.

What did the pet store say? I would compare it to their stands beng sold specifically for aquariums. If it is manufactured from the same materials using the same methods it will probably be fine for an aquarium with the same length and width as the stand. At the end of the day if it is being sold for a reptile enclosure (without the weight of the water) it may be hard to secure a refund if it is used for a purpose other than what it was sold for.

Are you wondering if it would hold a 40 gal tank full of water? If that is the question, my bet is that it would. Just as long as the tank doesn't overlap the stand. It is really just the very large aquariums that you have to worry about the weight. Most stands for aquariums that small will work fine.

Good Luck

It would be best to measure the stand. Even though it would seem that 40 gallons is 40 gallons, there are tanks made as 40 "long" and 40 "breeder" and these will have different lengths and widths.

ADDITION:
It's probably the "breeder". The base would be about 36 x 18 or so, but still measure to make sure.

It would fit a forty gallon fish aquarium I would have thought. However all you need to do is measure the long side and the ends and then compare it with the aquariums in the shop and se eif any match.
