this is a woman who said we need a "return to victorian values". values that saw working class children at the age of four being deformed through working excesive hours in the mills, she single handedly finished industry in Britain, something we are still effected by today (no apprentiships) she stole milk from children, and finally as previously stated in an earlier answer she brought about the attitude in this country of "Im alright Jack" a self centred if im ok, its alright attitude!
A statue was recent;ly erected in her honour, in my opinion its a disgrace to all those people whose lives where destroyed by her, what people forget is that miners starved when they lost the jobs, and people in my city had to donate food parcels to them.
Not forgetting the privitisation of the railways!
Oh yeah i forgot....the coucil tax!!!

without a doubt maggie thatcher was the best prime minister this country has seen in a long time, at many times during her time in power she fought the majority of the worlds super powers to stop them crippling this country. yes she did make the ultimate mistake mwith the poll tax but her decision over the falklands was second to none and showed the whole world that england would not just give in to bully boys.
if only tony arselicker blair could take a few notes from her maybe this country would be salvageable once again, instead of thye rotting carcus it is at present.

Most Britons, even those of the left, have a good opinion of Margaret Thatcher. Certainly, while she was PM she was often disliked. Some of her policies are thought to have lead us to a more selfish and self seeking Britain. On balance, I would say that most of what she did, including the Falklands war, was good for UK the company, but some of it bad for UK the poor.
One of Margaret Thatcher's biggest mistakes was made while she was Minister of Education during the Edward Heath government of the 1970s. Her first action in the job was to stop school milk. Not only did this lead to health problems for hundreds of thousands of school children, it also denied the UK dairy industry a source of income. Many dairy farmers went to the wall as a result.
The other big mistakes made during her time in office were the disbanding of both the milk and potato marketing boards. These state enterprises ensured a good price for farmers and also a controlled price of these foods in the shops.
Like I say, her time in office did see some good improvements for UK as a whole. She ended once and for all the continuous strike culture which had caused so much difficulty in UK and which now seems just a bad dream from the past.

She had more balls than any other Prime Minister since Winston Churchill. She controlled the power of the Trade Unions, who were always calling their members out on strike. The Labour Party was largely financed by the Unions and were perceived to be "in the Unions pocket" Left wing Union leaders seemed to be running the country, not the elected government. Maggie changed all that. She turned the UK. from being the" sick man of Europe "to one of the most prosperous. Her legacy lives on, the Labour party had to re-invent itself ( New Labour ) as a far left Labour Party is virtually unelectable in the UK.

She was the greatest PM since Churchill. She saved this country from being forced into a stagnant soviet style economy by a gang of union bullies. The Soviet empire and her client states are having to go through the upheavals we went through 30 years ago to recover from 70 years of stagnant economies. She wasn't responsible for destroying the mining industry, that was done by a combination of greedy unions, incompetent managers and outdated working practises. She put this country on the road to having one of the strongest economies in Europe.
I was in the Falkland islands a few years ago and the people there are very grateful to her and the British army for saving them from the Argentine invasion and occupation. I wish we had someone of her calibre now

she set out to kill the working class and done a good job of it.
she stopped the strike culture....HER way, by closing down any industry that had a strike or supported the strikers.
in the north east she is a much despised woman and i can bet she is in other mining communities, the south loved her, the rest hated her.
she stopped council house building
she introduced the csa
poll tax.....the list could go on.
nobody would argue that she had balls and stuck by her plan, but that plan helped ruin a lot of lives.
she will never be forgotten for that.

Two recessions
Political mismanagement which led to the Falklands War
Ran up massive debts (Callaghan's 1970s IMF load was a bargain in comparison)
Made the decision which led to Black Wednesday
destroyed the coal mining industry out of political spite (gas would be cheaper in the UK now if we generated in from coal rather than importing it from Ukraine and Russia).
Promised not to increase VAT, and then did so
Mismanaged the NHS
Supported terrorists in Afghanistan
Supported the Apartheid regime in South Africa
Big mate of General Pinochet

despite the poll tax and the miners and all that she was, in hindsight, a great pm. she spoke out and took no BS from her party or the opposition. I'm sure she has regrets about her time in office and wishes she could go back and rewrite some of her history but check out some of her speeches and you will see what a leader of men she was.
btw i'm a labour voter.

She did destroy the out of control unions,
this is still going on with the destruction of the post office.
