It's incredible. Like, all the medium-priced chains, such as Days Inn, Quality Inn, Best Western, etc. always seem to be owned by a Pakistani or Indian person named Patel in any given city.

True enough! Most mid range lodging is owned by East Indian's. This is partly the case due to the government giving them small business loans for this type of business. Also, Cendant which owns Super 8, Days Inn, Travelodge, Knights Inn, Ramada, Amerihost etc is an Indian company. Also, much of the upper management at Best western is also Indian. The franchising for these chains and others is geared preferentially towards Indians. As for Patel; My understanding is that Patel has the connotation of "innkeeper" in India so most of them use that as opposed to their given names. Bhatka is also popular. Ironically, Motel 6 is one of the largest Non- Indian firms which is owned by Accor a French company.

Most hotels, actually.

The vast majority of hotels (including some of those in the chains suggested by other posters) are franchised. Any entrepreneur can become a hotel owner if he or she has the ambition. A lot of south Asian immigrants (who are for the most part American citizens) own various small businesses--among them, hotels.
